Birth Control Q & A

What is birth control?

Birth control is any method, medication, or device that prevents pregnancy. There are many types of birth control available today, some of which are more effective and easier to use than others. The compassionate team at J. Shan Young, MD, helps you decide the best type for your body and lifestyle right now.

What are the different types of birth control?

Some forms of birth control are available without a prescription, including barrier methods like condoms. It’s important to remember that using a latex condom every time you have sex is the only way to protect yourself from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

At J. Shan Young, MD, the team offers many types of birth control, including:

Short-acting hormonal methods

These are pills, patches, vaginal rings, or injections that release hormones to prevent pregnancy. You need to take a pill every day, replace a patch weekly, and insert a new vaginal ring every month. A birth control shot lasts three months.

Long-acting reversible contraceptives

Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) include birth control implants. LARCs are among the most reliable forms of birth control, with a 99% effectiveness rate.

They’re also the easiest to use, requiring no action on your part after insertion. LARCs last for 3-12 years, depending on the type.

Permanent birth control

If you’re sure you don’t want to get pregnant in the future, permanent birth control may be right for you. Also called sterilization or tubal ligation, this surgical procedure is very difficult to reverse.

How can I get birth control?

First, your provider spends time discussing your preferred form of birth control. They consider factors like your medical history and whether you want to get pregnant in the future. They may perform a physical exam to help determine the best birth control options for you.

Then, they recommend the best birth control methods for your specific needs. This may change over the years, and it’s common to try multiple forms of birth control before you find the right type for you.
